Beacon Community Services (BCS) celebrates five decades of supporting seniors and growing to span communities and generations this year.

Since inception in 1974, BCS has continually adapted to meet the changing landscape of social challenges, from supporting seniors with essential care and companionship to empowering youth through housing, education, and skill-building.

In 2023, BCS housed more than 135 individuals through a mix of dementia care homes, assisted living, and subsidized and affordable housing.

Its Homelessness Prevention and Shelter Services supported 175 youth and employment services helped 118 individuals find work.

BCS provides 250 licensed childcare spaces, supporting working families in communities throughout Greater Victoria.

In the last year, The SHOAL Centre welcomed 963 new members, supporting seniors in maintaining active lifestyles and the centre’s More than Meals program served 17,740 meals.

Beacon’s Better at Home program facilitated 2,433 medical drives and cleaned 2,935 client homes.

“As we celebrate our 50th year, we reflect on the incredible journey that has brought us to this moment. It’s a testament to the tireless dedication of our staff, volunteers, and supporters who have remained steadfast in our mission to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others,” CEO Tricia Gueulette said in a news release. “As we embark on this milestone year, we are filled with gratitude for the past, and enthusiasm for the future, as we continue to offer hope and opportunity for generations to come.”

To commemorate the milestone, BCS hosts staff and volunteer appreciation events and a special fundraising event later this year.

A new website at beaconcs.ca also signals the next chapter in the agency’s work.
