Canadian universities are slipping. That is, if you put any faith in the Times Higher Education's World University Rankings.

The report – produced by Thomson-Reuters – ranks the top 400 schools in the world, basing its findings on 13 indicators and categories.

The University of Toronto was the highest-ranked school in Canada, finishing 20th overall.

Two B.C. schools – the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria – placed in the final 200, with UBC finishing in 32nd. UVic finished well behind at 173rd, but it wasn't ranked in last year's World University Rankings.

Only eight Canadian schools finished in the top half of the list, whereas the United States and the United Kingdom were the only countries to place schools in the top 12.

The California Institute of Technology finished first overall, ahead of Harvard in second. The University of Oxford (United Kingdom) finished third.
