Spectrum students team up with Louise Rose on Hairspray
Victoria jazz singer Louise Rose will join Spectrum community school’s musical theatre students on stage for their production of Hairspray.
Drama teacher Tim Barss says the students are really enjoying preparing for the high-energy show.
And it’s not just for the music. Hairspray, set in the 1960s, gives today’s generation of students insight into the issues of another era.
“It tackles some pretty important themes in terms of racial segregation and prejudice (and) discrimination based on both race and body type,” he said.
The play runs Feb. 24, 25, 29 and March 1, 2 and 3 at 7:30 p.m.
There is also a matinee on March 4 at 2 p.m.
All shows run at Spectrum community school (957 Burnside Rd. West).
Tickets ($10/$8) are available at the school office.
Because of the themes touched on in Hairspray, the students, along with Rose, will also participate in a Black History Month concert on Feb. 26 in Central Saanich.
That show takes place at Friendship Community Church (7820 Central Saanich Rd.) at 2:30 p.m.
