ALS Walk for Sept. 14 at UVic

The event includes guest speakers, entertainment, silent auction and food.

The Victoria Peoples Drug Mart Walk for ALS will be held on Sept. 14 in parking lot 6 at the University of Victoria.

Registration is at 11:30 a.m. The walk begins at 1 p.m.

The B.C. Walks for ALS is the biggest fundraising event for the ALS Society of B.C. All money raised is used to fund research and to provide support and equipment for people diagnosed with the disease. Last year, more than $50,000 was raised.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is characterised by muscle spasticity, rapidly progressive weakness due to muscle wasting. This results in difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing. Average survival time from onset to death is 39 months, and only four per cent survive longer than 10 years,
