Saanich tennis club celebrates 40 years this month

Players, executives from decades past are asked to submit photographs, memorabilia for anniversary July 26

The Saanich Tennis Club is celebrating 40 years of tennis on Saturday, July 26. The event will involve an exhibition match, draws, raffles, games and a BBQ lunch.

There will also be a bench dedication for an honorary member of the club who died last year, Sylvia Fong.

“We’re trying to get as many of the past executive members to come out,” said Judy Huff, membership coordinator at the club. “It’s basically to honour all of the past executives [who] built up the club.”

The club also put together binders of old photographs, newsletters and membership lists for members to look at.

“It’ll be nice to reminisce,” said Huff.

The event takes place from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. After that, the club’s two courts will be available for open tennis.

Although the club has been open for 40 years, it did not have its own tennis courts until 1991. Prior to that, the club used the courts at Lambrick Park. In April 1990, the Saanich Tennis Club reached an agreement with the municipality of Saanich and BC Hydro to acquire the courts on Viewmont Avenue, the current location of the club, Huff said.

The club would like to add a third court where a parking lot currently is, but Huff said it is quite difficult.

“That’s a big job to take on to see if we can negotiate with Saanich to turn it into a court, and then the cost,” said Huff. “Maybe for the 60th [anniversary] we’ll have three courts.”

Any current or former members wanting to come to the event are asked to RSVP. For more information about the event, call Judy Huff at 250-658-4438.
