The St. Luke’s Players are up to their old tricks again with the production of the Robin Hood Caper, the group’s final performance for the season. The theatrical group has been a staple on the Saanich live theatre scene, putting on performances that appeal to all ages at St. Luke’s Hall since 1950.
The Robin Hood Caper revolves around a gang of four elderly friends, all retired criminals who have a penchant for ripping off the rich to help the less fortunate, explained Janine Longy, St. Luke’s Players publicity chair. Longy portrays Emily, whose specialty is collecting husbands, 17 in all, to procure their life insurance, alimony payments and benefits to further the gang’s noble pursuits.
She is joined by Philip, a master forger, Flora, a light-fingered shoplifter and pickpocket, and Jason, a chameleon-like character and master of multiple roles he tailors to suit whatever the gang gets up to.
“It’s very funny and full of great comedy,” said Longy, who has been with St. Luke’s Players for the past six years. “There’s also a romantic challenge to solve as well that adds another twist to the plot.”
It’s true community theatre at its best, completely driven by a dedicated group of volunteers, she added.
The performances take place May 17-20 and May 24-27 at 7:30 p.m. There are also matinee performances on May 20, 21, 27 and 28 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $16 and are available at eventbrite.ca, the Papery at 669 Fort St. or at the door.
