While winter can be a time to curl up inside and stay warm, it’s also a time to start the year off right and return to the activities that fulfill us. This new year, why not try one of these programs to stay active, start a new hobby, learn a skill or meet new friends?

Little Dancers 2 to 3 years Energetic little ones will love this introduction to the wonderful world of movement and music at Dansko Dance Studios. Choose from two morning classes, Tuesdays at 10:10 a.m. or Thursdays at 10:25 a.m. Starts the week of Jan. 8 (barcodes 108391 and 108392, respectively).

Grow Your Own Groceries – Container Gardening 50 years+ Join this one-session workshop where we’ll learn about soil health, site selection, seeds and starts, easy plants to grow and more. 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 3 at Saanich Commonwealth Place (barcode 109877).

Improve Your Core Strength and Flexibility 19 years+ Sweat and sculpt in Strength and Core (barcode 108445), Wednesdays from 9 to 10 a.m. Or strengthen and lengthen as you improve posture and build a strong, stable core in a Flexibility and Core (barcode 107382), Tuesdays from 5:45 to 6:40 p.m. These programs begin the week of Jan. 8 at Saanich Commonwealth Place.

Art for Home Learners 7 to 12 years This hands-on program encourages creative expression and skill development in a fun and inclusive environment through drawing, printmaking and sculpture. Thursdays, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre. Starts Jan. 11 (barcode 108245).

Chronic Pain/Mild Movement 19 years+ A safe, mild exercise class for people living with chronic pain, fibromyalgia or those just looking for gentle movement. Sessions Tuesdays or Thursdays at 11:30 a.m., starting the week of Jan. 8 at Saanich Commonwealth Place (barcodes 107372 and 107373, respectively).

Body Shop 16 years+ Improve your muscle activation, technique, core stamina and endurance in this functional group training class. Classes run Fridays, 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Saanich Commonwealth Place, starting Jan. 12 (barcode 108788), or at Prospect Lake Community Hall on Mondays or Wednesdays from 9 to 10 a.m. starting the week of Jan. 8 (barcodes 107485 and 107487 respectively).

Ballet with Ease 55 years+ A gentler ballet class for those who may have mobility issues but still want to experience the joy of ballet. Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre, starting Jan. 10 (barcode 108174).

Creative Cartooning and Comics 10 to 14 years Using pen, pencil and markers, learn to communicate sequential action, movement, story and sound, panel layout, speech bubbles and lettering. Mondays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre; sessions begin Jan. 15 (barcode 108296).

Programs for Creative Preschoolers 18 months to 3 years Keep your little one busy with creative projects, songs and gym time in these fun parent and tot programs. Join Muckin’ and Messin’, Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m. or Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. (barcodes 106717 and 106718), or Playtime Combo on Mondays at 9:15 a.m. (Barcode 106726). These Saanich Commonwealth Place programs start the week of Jan. 8.

Yoga Saanich Commonwealth Place offers Yoga for a Solid Foundation (13 years+), an all-levels Hatha yoga class, on Mondays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. (barcode 108584) and Yoga – Empower Flow (16 years+), where you can deepen your regular practice, Tuesdays from 5 to 6:15 p.m. (barcode 108561). New to Gordon Head Recreation Centre is Yoga for Motherhood, welcoming moms to a shared practice Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. (barcode 111635). Classes start the week of Jan. 8.

Balance and Strength 50 years+ Strength-based exercises on and around a chair help improve your balance, coordination and stability so you can enjoy your regular activities without fear of falling or injury. Starts Jan. 11, on Thursdays from 9 to 10 a.m. at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre (barcode 107982).

Art Field Trip Club 13 to 17 years With a sketchbook in hand, explore galleries, art studios and public art around the city to expand your horizons and find inspiration. Four Saturday afternoon outings in Winter/Spring 2024, with the first on Jan. 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. (barcodes 108551, 108557, 108559 and 108560).

Low and Tone 16 years+ This fun, easy, low-impact adult fitness class combines upbeat music with cardio and toning to leave you feeling your best! Tuesdays starting Jan. 9 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Prospect Lake Community Hall (barcode 108960).

Exercise Programs for Youth Learn the fundamentals in Strength Training for Youth 10 to 12 years Thursdays from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m. at Saanich Commonwealth Place, starting Jan. 18 (barcode 108860). Or try Coping with Exercise for Youth 13 to 19 years, an educational program held in the weight room, Fridays from 4 to 5 p.m., starting Jan. 12 at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre (barcode 108674).
