Saanich car fire engulfs garage

An afternoon of vehicle repairs turned into more than $25,000-worth of damage when a car caught fire and set a residential garage ablaze.

The Saanich fire department responded to a call from the Gorge-Tillicum area.

A man who had been working on his vehicle Saturday afternoon reported that when he tried to start the car a fire broke out under the hood. The flames quickly spread to the garage.

Firefighters arrived at the residence in the 3000-block of Wascana St. just after 6 p.m. to find the interior of a single-storey accessory building fully engulfed.

The vehicle was destroyed and the building gutted. Damage to the vehicle and garage contents have not yet been estimated. The damage to the building itself is estimated at $25,000.
