Janitor takes punch, but busts thief

A janitor is being credited for catching a thief who Saanich police believed targeted a handful of businesses in the 3900-block of Quadra St.

Around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, police were called to a mortgage broker in an office building at 3995 Quadra St. after the janitor spotted an unknown man in the building.

The janitor attempted to grab the man, but was punched in the face. A second employee came to the janitor’s aid, and the pair was able to successfully hold down the suspect until police arrived.

A 46-year-old Victoria man, who has a decades-long history of commercial property crimes, was arrested and faces one count of break-and-enter to a commercial building.

“Apparently this individual had property on him from the party store,“ said Sgt. Dean Jantzen, referencing two break-ins earlier this month at a shop just a block away.
