January bail hearing for abduction suspect

Kian Chong, the suspect behind an attempted kidnapping in Saanich earlier this month, appeared in Victoria court briefly via video.

Last week, Chong’s lawyer Martin Allen requested a delay for the bail hearing until Jan. 3, which was granted. He told the court he needs more time to review the significant amount of disclosure documents coming from the Crown.

Chong is the suspect behind an attempted kidnapping of a 17-year-old girl on the evening of Dec. 3 on De Souza Place in Saanich.

The girl escaped from a rental van after her 17-year-old friend intervened and confronted the man, who slashed her with a knife.

The suspect drove off at high speed, abandoned the van and was arrested on foot later that evening.
