Stabbing at New Year’s house party in Saanich

Saanich police are seeking suspects behind a violent stabbing on New Year’s Day that sent one man to hospital with life threatening injuries.

Officers responded at 4 a.m. Jan. 1 to a house party in the 400-block of Boleskine Rd. and found two injured males amid a chaotic scene.

One 25-year-old resident received a laceration to his head inside the home. He was treated and released the same day from Royal Jubilee hospital.

A second male, age 23, followed and confronted the attackers near Davidson Avenue, and received a serious wound to his torso, possibly piercing several organs. He was in surgery on Jan. 1 and remains in intensive care, according to police.

Saanich police Sgt. Chris Horsley said that given the number of intoxicated witnesses and the fact that many people were fleeing from the house as police arrived, getting reliable information on the suspects has proven difficult.

It remains unclear if the suspects, thought to be two or three young males, were attending the house party or were walking by and engaged in an altercation with people at the home. Investigators are speaking with cab drivers picking up from the house and to neighbours, and executed a search warrant in the house Tuesday evening.

The house party wasn't out of control and didn't draw noise complaints, Horsley said, but about 30 people fled the area after police started arriving.

"It was a typical chaotic scene," Horsley said. "There's not a lot of co-operation from those at the party. We don't know what precipitated the assault."

A police dog tracked the suspects to Harriet and the Trans-Canada Highway near Uptown, but lost the scent.

Investigators are still interviewing witnesses. Anyone with information can call Saanich police at 250-475-4321.
