Driver veers into oncoming lanes, avoids crash
A driver thought to be on drugs veered across oncoming traffic on McKenzie Avenue during the rain soaked rush-hour this morning, but managed to not hit anyone.
Witnesses told Saanich police that a Ford Explorer headed westbound on McKenzie near Quadra crossed into eastbound lanes shortly before 8 a.m., drove over the curb and sidewalk, onto grass and came to rest against a brick wall next to the Telus property.
The lone driver was fortunate not to hit any other vehicles or injure anyone, police say.
The 32-year-old male driver remained the truck and police on the scene suspect he was impaired by drugs. He faces charges of impaired driving. Police say weather and speed don’t appear to be a factor in the crash.
Earlier this morning, a Mazda turning left on Quadra Street to access the Pat Bay Highway north on-ramp hit a scooter. A 44-year-old Victoria resident was taken to hospital with lower leg injuries.
Police say heavy rainfall was likely a factor. No charges or tickets were issued.
