Animals escape barn fire in West Saanich

Saanich firefighters can be credited with helping save the lives of several farm animals after a barn caught fire in the 1700-block of Woodsend Dr. near Prospect Lake Road late Wednesday night.

It took two fire engines and 11 fire fighters to put out the 11 p.m. blaze, which caused an estimated $50,000 in damage.

"The first arriving crew found the rear portion of the barn to be involved in fire," said acting battalion chief Derrik Ash. "All animals made it out of the barn with no injuries."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
