The Peninsula Singers are close to hitting the $50,000 mark in donated funds to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital’s Music Therapy program.

So far, the group has donated $48,845, and plan to present a cheque soon which they hope will bring them to the $50,000 mark.

The Peninsula Singers have 60 members whose ages range from late-20s to 85.

They perform six concerts a year at the Mary Winspear Centre, with all proceeds going to charity.

Dianne Taffe, president of the Peninsula Singers, says that they choose to donate to the Music Therapy program as they “believe music lightens the soul, brings us closer together and is joyous.”

This year, the group has raised $2,500 and Taffe says she is proud of their work with Saanich Peninsula Hospital.

As well as donating their concert proceeds, the singers also perform two concerts a year to the patients in the hospital’s Extended Care Unit.

“It’s heartwarming to look out at elderly people who sing along, mouthing the words and clapping their hands lightly. The whole dining hall is filled with wheelchairs and beds, it’s chock-a-block,” says Taffe.
