Saanich police warn of a large black bear

Black bear comfortable around humans, say police, who have called in conservation officers

Saanich police are warning members of the public to be aware of a bear roaming a rural part of the community.

“Saanich residents are encouraged to not approach these animals and report any sightings within the Saanich municipality to ensure the public’s safety,” Cst. DJ Swanstrom in a release.

Residents living in the area of West Saanich Road and the 5800 block of Wallace Drive reported seeing a large black bear hanging around their properties and rummaging their garbage throughout Sunday evening.

Residents informed police that the bear appeared to be comfortable around people and had been wandering across their properties all day. The bear was not present when police attended.

Police notified provincial conservation officers and are encouraging members of the public to contact them if they any additional details.
