Work on an upgraded pathway connecting Carey Road at Uptown and the Galloping Goose regional trail at the junction with Lochside Trail is nearing the final stages.

The $300,000 project includes a four-metre-wide pathway, a ramp between Carey and the Goose with an easier incline than the current S-curve, an additional stairway and new bus stop pad on Carey.

Construction started in early April and, weather depending, could be finished by late May.

“The connection that currently exists there off the Galloping Goose is fairly steep and somewhat narrow, and limits the access to the Uptown area,” said Saanich director of engineering Harley Machielse.

One of the changes includes permanently closing the pedestrian underpass beneath Carey Road.

The underpass is often the site of litter and vandalism and removing access to this walkway will improve safety without compromising accessibility for those with mobility constraints, said a Saanich release.

The project is a partnership with CRD Parks, B.C. Transit and Uptown.

Machielse said future work in the area will include bike crossings as well as improvements on the east side of Carey.

“All that roadwork – which is a new sidewalk [and] a three-metre bike lane that’s bi-directional – along Ravine and Carey will be built as part of the development at the corner,” he said, adding when that work takes place will depend on the developer’s timeline.
