LETTER: Development stretching the limits

I’m not against development and densification – really, I’m not. But Saanich planners’ broken public consultation practice makes it seem like I am.

I’m not against development and densification – really, I’m not. But Saanich planners’ broken public consultation practice makes it seem like I am.

What I’m opposed to is the planners’ practice of taking a community development plan – a plan based on public consultation – and working with developers to stretch it past its limits. An example is Kang &Gill’s development of 4024 – 4036 Shelbourne St.

The Shelbourne Valley plan clearly designates that Feltham Village should have a maximum building height of four storeys. Yet the developer is pushing for five, based on the recently built five-storey building beside it.

None of the residential neighbours of this property want another five-storey building in the vicinity. One is bad enough. Please don’t gather public input, and then propose development plans that ignore that public input. You’re just asking for public opposition at your council meeting on Oct. 3. Please, just stick to the plan.
