It’s been interesting reading the news for the last week or two. But I’m left scratching my head. In one article, a person is caught after an alleged carjacking … and then he’s released. He goes out the next day and does the same thing. And is let go. Then he’s accused of a robbery and is finally sent to jail to await trial.
But here’s the kicker, on May 1, the province is bringing in fines of $500 to $5,000 per day for someone who rents out a home or suite as a short-term rental in an area where they’re not allowed to. So who’s the criminal here? Why is there swift and expensive justice on one hand, and a slap on the wrist for the other.
Premier David Eby calls the one doing the illegal rental a “speculator” who is admonished by the premier for being greedy. As for the other? It seems it’s just business as usual. Can someone explain the logic to me?
