LETTER: Taxpayers shouldn’t pick up tab for political parties

Premier John Horgan is leaning on the taxpayers’ wallet with his decision to use public money to fund political parties. The NDP could have displayed a giant step forward instead of following in the footsteps of former premiers.

The taxpayers already provide a bonus to politicians in the form of a campaign donation with a generous tax receipt. The political handout is far more generous than any other charitable donation. It is another example of feeding from the trough, a hand in the taxpayer’s pocket, and taking candy from a baby. Politicians will call it something else.

Taking $30 million from the taxpayer is a poor choice and weak leadership. This highway robbery could have funded HOV lanes and reduced transit fares. What could have been a demonstration of courage shows weakness and will provide an opportunity for an early election.

Politicians earn trust and respect. Unfortunately, this is a classic tale of Robin Hood robbing the rich … to help the politicians.
