LETTER: UVic novelty courses nothing to celebrate

Latin and philosophy aren’t stuffy – they are at the very heart of a sound liberal education

Re: Unique courses abound at University of Victoria (News, Aug. 6)

The praise of the University of Victoria by Don Descoteau (Saanich News Aug 6) seems misplaced when you consider that in the Times Higher Education supplement of world university rankings for 2014, UVic comes in at No. 224.

I predict that when the farcical courses promoted by Descoteau are taken into consideration for the 2015 rankings, UVic will be lucky to make it above the Turkey Agricultural College at 356.

Latin and philosophy aren’t stuffy – they are at the very heart of  a sound liberal education.
