The 54th annual Cedar Hill Open men’s golf tournament will tee off Saturday and Sunday at Cedar Hill Golf Course. The 36-hole stroke-play tournament is expected to draw 200 amateurs and close to 20 professionals, with fans welcome to come check out the action.

Champions Tour professional Jim Rutledge will be playing with professional caddy Gary Doherty, Cedar Hill teaching professional Doug Brown and Uplands amateur Wayne Dalby. Childhood buddies Rutledge and Doherty both started their golfing careers as junior members at Cedar Hill. More fan favourites include former Cedar Hill junior Gord Scutt and local professionals Ben Griffin, Paul Devenport, Kevin Maxwell and Jeff Palmer.

A high calibre of amateur golfers will also be teeing it up this weekend including last year’s overall champion Brent Wilson, 2016 Cedar Hill club champion Scott Davis, and past Cedar Hill Open champions Kevin Carrigan and Jarred Callbeck.

“The Cedar Hill Open always attracts a full field, and players come back year after year to play here,” said Paul Mooney, Cedar Hill Golf Club captain. “Even though the course is a par 67, it’s a mistake to underestimate the challenge. It demands accuracy off the tee and if you don’t have a good short game, you won’t score well.”

The Cedar Hill Golf Club has hosted and organized this annual event for more than 50 years, with the help of many volunteers and the support of the pro shop staff.

“The club is proud to be able to showcase this jewel of Saanich,” said Mooney. “After one of the wettest winters on record, the greens crew has worked extremely hard to get the course ready for this weekend. The greens are in excellent shape, as good as they’ve ever been.”

The Cedar Hill Golf Course is owned by the District of Saanich and features some of the best views in the city.

There is no admission charge for spectators. Players tee off front and back tees both days between 7 and 9 a.m. and between noon and 2 p.m. The clubhouse will be open throughout the event to sell snacks and beverages, breakfast sandwiches in the mornings and barbecued burgers in the afternoons.
