Penny Sakamoto
Penny Sakamoto is group publisher for Black Press-Greater Victoria, leading a team of about 65 staff and approximately 1,200 newspaper carriers. She graduated from journalism school in Winnipeg and has spent her career in the newspaper business in Canada and the U.S. She served as president of the B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association and on the board of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association. In 2008, Sakamoto was awarded the Silver Quill Award for more than 25 years of distinguished service to the industry. Sakamoto works out of the Broughton Street office in downtown Victoria.

Daniel Palmer
A Newfoundland native, Daniel graduated high school in the Lower Mainland and attended the University of Victoria, graduating in political science and psychology. He completed the journalism certificate program at Langara College, and his work has since appeared in Metro, The Province and Black Press publications across B.C. Daniel joined Victoria News in July 2012 as a reporter and became editor of Saanich News in July 2014.

Kyle Slavin
Kyle Slavin has been a reporter for the Saanich News since 2009. Raised on the Lower Mainland, Kyle completed his bachelor of applied journalism degree in 2010, and has experience working at a number of Black Press publications in Metro Vancouver. Kyle is a national award-winning reporter, having won a first-place 2012 Canadian Community Newspaper Award for environmental writing. In his spare time, he enjoys cycling -- a newfound passion that stems from his being named to the 2012 Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock team.

Natalie North became a staff reporter with Black Press in 2010 during her final year of study toward a writing degree from the University of Victoria. She had spent the two summers prior interning at community papers, in wilds of northern B.C. and in her lovely little hometown of Salt Spring Island. When she’s not being a newsie, Natalie likes telling jokes and supporting local filmmaking.

Travis Paterson interned at Toro Magazine and The Hockey News while completing the Print Futures writing program at Douglas College. His passion for sports runs deep, he believes in the ability of athletics to offer stewardship and the power of positive thinking. Sports can also teach important life skills and bring a community together, which is why he loves covering sports through a community paper.
