2021 Light Up the City entries spread cheer around Greater Victoria

Winning decorators impressed judges with festive lighting displays and other elements

In December we asked Greater Victoria residents to help us Light Up the City, and you didn’t disappoint. Folks from Sooke to Saanich to Swartz Bay pitched in, but three homes in particular stood out to the judges.

The contest, which received more than 50 entries from across the regions this year, invited residents to decorate their homes, apartments and businesses and submit them to an online directory.

The 2021 winners all share a passion for their communities and created an impressive collection of festive decorations in an all-out effort to spread some neighbourhood cheer.

First place: 4360 Torquay Dr.

The Gordon Head home of Yvette Fornelli and family was decorated in a big way for a fourth year in 2021. With over 100 pieces of hand-painted yard art – in particular the Peanuts gang – the home display was a shoo-in for the first place spot.

The Saanich family also put out a collection box benefiting the SPCA for any passersby who wanted to make the season bright for local animals.

Second place: 1973 Colwood Cres.

Home to Tasha Knight and family, this Colwood residence could probably be spotted from a kilometre away during the holiday season. Featuring lights, inflatables, vintage molded figures and wooden cutouts, their display did not disappoint.

Third place: 962 Saturna Pl.

Jessica Sogai and family lit up their Cordova Bay home with a host of familiar characters, lollipops and a whole lot of lights. From the roof to the balconies to the lawn, festive delights could be found all over their Saanich property.
