The City of Victoria is calling for artists to submit pieces for two upcoming public exhibitions.

“Short-term public art installations enhance a city and contribute to its vibrancy and livability,” read a statement on victoria.ca, “In addition to its annual Call to Artists for the Commercial Alley Outdoor Art Gallery installation, the City is introducing Commute, a bus shelter-based exhibit.”

The annual Commercial Alley show is in its sixth year. Located between the 500-block of Yates Street and Bastion Square, the outdoor display aims to enhance the vitality of the area during normal business hours.

The artwork needed for this space are four 1.2 metre by 2.4 metre panels, however artists may cut and reconfigure the panels within provided specifications. The selected artists/creative team will be paid $2,000 for their work, which will be installed by the City. The installation will be showcased for a year starting in August.

The second project, Commute, is new this year. In partnership with Pattison Outdoor Advertising, 18 artworks will be showcased on six bus shelters in Victoria.

This call to artists is open to emerging, Indigenous and multicultural artists, craftspeople and artisans residing in the Capital Region, including the Gulf Islands. Selected artists will receive $500 per image displayed.

Artists can submit up to five original and suitable existing artworks, or create new artwork for consideration. The selected artists will be announced in late April.

Submissions are to be emailed by 4 p.m. on Monday, April 9 to culture@victoria.ca.
