Firefighters croon for fundraiser

Hockey team needs help to get to New York for World Police and Fire Games

A group of local firefighters hope to compete in one of the world’s premier sporting events.

Twenty men from Victoria, Esquimalt, Saanich and Oak Bay fire departments are hoping to play in the World Police and Fire Games in New York City in August and are hosting a fundraising event to get there.

“It’s just a good chance for people to support the tradition of Greater Victoria’s own fire service professionals,” said Esquimalt firefighter Tyler Harvey, who is on the hockey team. “(The games are) a chance for us to represent Victoria on the world scene.”

On Friday (March 18), Harvey, musician Mike Hann and local DJs will play at a fundraiser at White Eagle Hall, 90 Dock St. Food will be provided and proceeds from ticket and drink sales will help the men get to New York.

Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20, available at HtO Sun Surf Swimwear, 1314 Broad St., and McRae’s Restaurant, 1652 McRae Ave.

Harvey said the local police officers and firefighters who go to the games will also be part of a ceremony for the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York.

“We’re sending a very strong lineup of players and we’re hoping for good results, but in the end it’s about remembering 9/11 and the comeraderie of meeting other fire professionals.”
