Free centennial walk planned for Esquimalt

Scenic five- and 10-kilometre routes available for walkers

Get to know Esquimalt and at the same time, celebrate the township’s centennial year at an upcoming community walk.

The free event on July 12, hosted by the Township of Esquimalt and organized by the Garden City Wanderers, the Victoria Y and the Juan de Fuca Volkssport clubs, will feature five- and 10-kilometre routes.

“We’re doing it to help Esquimalt celebrate,” said organizer David Cattrall.

The walk will also mark the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Volkssport Federation.

During the first one-hour leg of the journey, participants will travel along the waterfront, through Macaulay Point and Saxe Point parks.

People wanting to soak up more of Esquimalt on foot can continue on for another hour for an additional five kilometres, along trails and through neighbourhoods such as West Bay.

A highlight of this leg of the journey features a jaunt to the top of Highrock Park, the highest point in the township.

Walkers are asked to meet at the Archie Browning Sports Centre on July 12 at 5:30 p.m., for a 6 p.m. start. For details, call 250-598-4316, or visit www.gardencitywanderers.ca.
