A tiny Oak Bay used book shop helps readers stock up for summertime reading with hits annual sale Saturday.

The annual Churchmouse Books summer sale celebrates a “green” theme for 2023.

With re-use a general theme for the volunteer-run Churchmouse Bookshop, organizers gather used books in good condition and give them in return for cash donations. St. Mary’s Anglican Church supports three main charity partners with those donations – the food bank at St. John the Divine, Threshold Housing Society and Our Place Society.

On June 10, shoppers will find the usual wide collection second hand books in excellent condition – thousands of them filling shelves tables the pews.

Popular categories include fiction, mystery, thrillers, history, art, science and travel. Book lovers will also find a good selection of Indigenous literature, Canadiana, royalty, food, cooking and children’s works. Previously enjoyed puzzles will also be up for grabs. Patrons can also bid in a silent auction of collection hold-back green-themed books.

Billed as a community event, the sale includes pulled pork sliders and hot dogs along with beverages and an opportunity to chat with neighbours on the patio or in the garden.

Admission is free.

The book sale runs Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s church, 1701 Elgin Rd.
