Oak Bay Marina’s Leaderboard keeps fishermen in competition for the biggest catch

‘It’s a fun competition and fishermen love a chance to brag a little bit.’

In a tradition swiped from their longtime involvement with resorts, the Oak Bay Marina introduced the leader board two years ago.

“Most of them are boaters from the marina, but it’s for anyone,” said Maya Mallory, marketing manager, Oak Bay Marine Group.

“It’s a fun competition and fishermen love a chance to brag a little bit.”

It tracks two type of fish, salmon and halibut, from January through December and is a hit among fishermen.

“The leader board allows my clients to feel like they are participating in something more than just a fishing trip and can be part of something bigger,” said Kingsley Grant of KingSize Adventures. “Of course it does not hurt my reputation to have most of the fish on the leader board coming off of my boats and it helps keep a friendly competition going between myself and the other charters and helps us keep sharp in order to try and bump the competitors down the list.”
