Peanuts gang reunited in Oak Bay park on Christmas Day

Stolen homemade characters replaced with those made by community members

Thanks to a community effort, the gang is back together around its Charlie Brown Christmas tree in Oak Bay’s Entrance Park.

A handful of the Peanuts characters – painted plywood cutouts that stood around in a visage of song each winter – were stolen early in the holiday season.

On Christmas Day, local teacher librarian Whitney Davis and a team of helpers replaced the missing Charlie Brown, his sister Sally and his devoted dog Snoopy. The characters rejoined Lucy and Peppermint Patty around the spindly tree that graces the park at Foul Bay Road and Oak Bay Avenue.

Davis passed the site of the theft a few times over the month and wondered about the hand-crafted characters. She hoped someone would replace them.

“I kept thinking someone with more time than I actually have would have done that … I kept driving by and it kept not happening,” Davis told Black Press Media.

One day she got out a roll of white paper and drew out the three missing characters. As classes visited the library, students volunteered to help with the painting.

She planned to laminate them, but supply chain issues left the required material delayed, so she took them home for the winter break in hopes of finding an alternative.

Davis cut the characters out, her husband mounted them on plywood, and the family headed out into the freezing weather to reunite the Peanuts gang.

“I wouldn’t have done them like this had I planned better and had more time. I just wanted to get them up and have the friends together on Christmas,” Davis said.

Anyone with information about the missing decorations is asked to call Oak Bay Police Department at 250-592-2424.
