An event today (Oct. 5) aims to help a man donate thousands of his books to children across Canada and in other countries.
Mark Zelinski of Hamilton, Ont. spent 35 years travelling the world and snapping photographs, which he compiled into a selection of hardcover books. He'll sell them today at Coles Books in Tillicum Shopping Centre to help offset the cost of donating about 6,000 copies to children all over the world.
"Having travelled for 35 years, I've been exposed to a lot of deprivation and poverty," Zelinski said. "I see how lucky we are in Canada and the things we take for granted – a lot of other cultures don't have access to (what we have)."
He said his books are used in orphanages and other rescue centres in countries abroad to help with grief counselling and literacy.
In B.C., he'll donate about 1,000 copies altogether to the Canadian Red Cross Western Zone, the Canadian World Education Society (CANWES), Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria, and Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific.
The event happens at 4 p.m. and includes a PowerPoint presentation and book signing.
