The District of Saanich, in partnership with Habitat Acquisition Trust, has introduced a pilot project that aims to enhance biodiversity on private properties within a designated area of the municipality.

The Good Neighbours: Saanich Biodiversity Partners project is part of Saanich’s Biodiversity Conservation Strategy, which seeks to encourage stewardship and conservation on private land.

Approximately 200 properties surrounding selected parks in Saanich fall within the project’s focus area, chosen for their role within the Biodiversity Habitat Network identified in the strategy.

Residents in the target area were informed about the initiative in October through mailed flyers and invited to participate in an online survey. Based on survey feedback, the project will offer eligible residents various forms of support, including:

  • On-site stewardship consultations with tailored advice.
  • Site reports with recommended actions and resources.
  • Training in effective stewardship techniques.
  • Workshops and nature walks focused on experiential learning.

“This partnership is a great opportunity to enhance biodiversity on private lands while empowering residents to become active land stewards,” said Coun. Judy Brownoff. “It takes a collective effort to protect our natural areas, and I’m grateful for the community’s enthusiasm.”

Funded by a grant from the Fraser Basin Council with financial support from Environment and Climate Change Canada, the pilot program will run until March 31, 2025.
