A co-ed team of Saanich Police officers visited Spectrum Community School on Monday for their annual challenge against a mixed team of graduating Thunder basketball players.
Well over 300 students crammed into the Spectrum gym as the Grade 12s fell by a score of about 35-22 (there is no score sheet for an event of this type) to the Saanich Police team.
The annual game is always fun, an experience done in a very positive light that the students look forward to all year, said athletic director Dominic Butcher.

“It’s a sendoff for our Grade 12s and it’s done in a proper spirit,” Butcher said.
Despite their excitement, the Spectrum players were also a little intimidated by the size of some of the police officers, which may have had an effect on the outcome.
“Players were throwing up a lot of threes, not venturing into the key too often,” Butcher said.

The police game is also a chance to strengthen the connection created during Spectrum’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock fundraising campaign in September, when the Tour de Rock cycling team visits the school.
Basketball season is otherwise wrapping up in high schools. Now starts the spring sports season with Spectrum fielding an ultimate Frisbee team, the first year ultimate will be played as an official B.C. School Sport. Spectrum also has tennis, rugby, girls soccer, track and field and badminton teams.
