Saanich police are urging families to plan ahead for a safe Halloween, with an emphasis on visibility and street safety during trick-or-treating hours.

The department's Block Watch Office has released comprehensive guidelines for Oct. 31, highlighting the importance of well-fitted costumes and clear visibility for children.

"Costumes should be light-coloured or bright, and we strongly recommend adding reflective tape or armbands to increase visibility," says the release. "Consider using makeup instead of masks to ensure children maintain good peripheral vision while walking."

For homeowners welcoming trick-or-treaters, police recommend keeping walkways clear of obstacles and using battery-operated lights instead of candles in jack-o'-lanterns. Pet owners are advised to keep animals indoors to prevent incidents with costumed visitors.

Drivers are reminded to expect increased foot traffic in residential areas on Halloween night, with extra police patrols planned throughout Saanich neighbourhoods.

The department emphasizes that vandalism isn't just a Halloween prank – it's against the law. Residents who witness suspicious activity are encouraged to contact Saanich police at 250-475-4321 or call 911 for emergencies.
