To help local equestrians improve their mental health, the Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association in Saanichton is launching a 'One Hoof at a Time' pledge event, during what they say is "viewed as the most depressing month of the year."

Participants will pledge to spend a certain number of hours with their horses during the two-week campaign while they are supported with tips and personal stories encouraging them to be mindful of how time with horses impacts their emotional well-being.

“By February people have had enough of the dark winter.  They haven’t had a break in a while and some find it tough,” said Liz Gagel, executive director of VTRA, in a news release. “We see it. Our programs aren’t just for those with physical or cognitive disabilities, in fact depression and anxiety have become the most frequent diagnoses we support.”

“Some of our participants are functioning professionals with crippling anxiety. Our equine-assisted services have been instrumental in helping treat that anxiety.”

Money will also be raised during the pledge event, with all funds going to VTRA programs. For more information or to register, visit www.vtra.ca.
