Two Saanich high soccer teams head to provincials this year, with Spectrum girls earning their first Island AAA title.

Spectrum Thunder captured its first AAA Sr. Girls Soccer Island Championship in extra time over Reynolds Roadrunners in Nanaimo on Tuesday (May 14).

“Despite being down 2-0 from two second-half Reynolds goals, Spectrum came back with key goals from co-captain Clara Chudley and a beautiful late and last-minute goal from Janeina Monge to push the tie to extra-time,” said coach Dom Butcher.

Penalties were also a factor, he added. A key save from goalkeeper Callie Turpin and the winning penalty from Brooklyn Robinson secured the title for the Spectrum Thunder girls, the first in the school’s history.

Spectrum and Reynolds advance to the 16-team provincial competition May 29 to 31 at Sullivan Heights Secondary in Surrey.
