A pair of groups in Oak Bay are offering help answering that age-old late-December question: what should I do with my old Christmas tree?
Both the Castaway Wanderers Rugby Football Club and the Oak Bay Fire Fighters Association, Local 1856, are operating tree-disposal events this year at different locations in the municipality.
The Wanderers’ operation, which serves as a fundraiser for the club, will be held on Currie Road beside the Windsor Park rose garden. Those dropping their trees off for onsite chipping may meet members of Canada’s 2011 World Cup team. Chipping services will be donated by Bartlett Tree Experts.
The event will run for six days: Dec. 30 from noon to 4 p.m., Dec. 31 through Jan. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Jan. 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The cost is by donation, with proceeds going to the club’s junior teams.
The firefighters’ union will host its own tree drop-off in the parking lot at Fireman’s Park, next to the Oak Bay fire hall. Cost is by donation, with proceeds going to a bursary fund for 2012 Oak Bay High graduates.
This tree recycling program has been running for more than 20 years, and last year’s event resulted in seven $500 bursaries being awarded.
Trees can be dropped off on Jan. 7 and 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
