While some would consider it an unusual sight, others just associate big rigs and little twinkle lights with the holiday season.
The 20th annual Island Equipment Owners Association’s Truck Light Convoy and Food Drive takes place this Saturday, Dec. 1, with trucks making their way through the downtown core, wrapping around the Victoria General Hospital, and passing through the West Shore before stopping at Western Speedway in Langford.
Roughly 80 trucks start at Ogden Point at 5:45 p.m. and, with the help of a police escort, wind through Victoria on Dallas Road, into Oak Bay on Beach Drive and Oak Bay Avenue (6:30 p.m.), before circling back to the downtown core (7 p.m. ) and head out of town on Douglas Street. Trucks will then circle the Victoria General Hospital at around 7:30 p.m. on Watkiss Way before heading down Island Highway into Colwood, turning right onto Goldstream Avenue and right onto Veterans Memorial Parkway in Langford at around 8 p.m. before finishing at 8:30.
The public is invited to join drivers and their trucks at Western Speedway. There will also be hot dogs and hot chocolate.
In addition to the convoy, the event is a fundraiser for various food banks in the Capital Region including the Mustard Seed, Goldstream Food Bank and the Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank. While residents cannot hand food to drivers during the event, there will be a number of drop off locations set up throughout the various municipalities.
