The District of Saanich is recognizing the contributions of hundreds of volunteers during National Volunteer Week, which runs from April 27 to May 3.
Mayor Dean Murdock called the volunteers’ dedication “inspiring,” noting their work helps build community.
Volunteers in Saanich support a wide range of services, from emergency preparedness and parks programming to community events and public safety initiatives. The Saanich Emergency Program (SEP), Parks and Recreation, and the Saanich Police Department all rely on volunteer support.
In 2023, SEP volunteers dedicated more than 3,600 hours to supporting residents during emergencies. Parks and Recreation volunteers logged over 20,500 hours in roles ranging from environmental education to arts programming. Saanich Police volunteers contributed nearly 2,000 hours, including traffic safety campaigns like Speed Watch and Cell Watch.
