Stelly’s TARDIS travels to Cap City Comic Con

Woodworking students at Stelly’s Secondary are building a TARDIS for Capital City Comic Con, which they hope to auction off.

The iconic police box, part of the long-running BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who, is made from three-dimensional plans available online and is 1:1 in scale. The box took about three weeks to build.

Tim Lockhart, the wood tech/art teacher, said a fellow teacher at another school connected him with B. Woodward of Cherry Bomb Toys, who is organizing this weekend’s convention (March 16-18), which features Patrick Warburton (Kronk in The Emperor’s New Groove and police officer Joe Swanson on Family Guy), Jay Baruchel (How To Train Your Dragon), and many other stars. Several schools were asked whether they wanted to do a project like this, and Stelly’s said yes. Nine students are taking turns with various aspects of the project.

“You just want to make sure all the joints are square, everything’s even, make sure nothing looks off to the eye because that will set off a potential buyer if we’re trying to sell it,” said Sawyer Adlersparre, a Grade 12 student.

“I grew up with a dad that’s in love with woodworking, so I’ve been exposed to it my whole life,” said Adlersparre, who wants to do electrical work when he graduates from Stelly’s.

“These skills I’m learning here I’ll be able to use in my career,” he said.

Ashleigh Fletcher, also in Grade 12, did not have woodworking experience before joining the class, but it’s something she has grown to enjoy. She enjoyed working in a team.

“Its really detail-oriented,” said Fletcher. “There’s lots of aesthetic details that I get to take charge of,” she laughed.

It is unclear whether it’s bigger on the inside than on the outside.
