Washington State Ferries resumes Sidney service on April 1

Community planning its annual welcome ceremony

The ‘other’ way for Islanders to get to Washington state is poised to return for another year

Washington State Ferries will resume its seasonal runs between Sidney, the San Juan Islands and Anacortes, WA on Easter Sunday this year.

WSF vessel MV Chelan is scheduled to arrive at the Sidney International Ferry Terminal on Ocean Avenue at 11:05 a.m. on Sunday, April 1.

The community will be out in force to welcome the service back again for another season — it’s 95th year of service.

The Sidney Sister Cities Association (SSCA) — Anacortes is one of three Sidney sister cities — is leading an official welcome of the ferry and its passengers. It’s a spring tradition.

Sidney Mayor Steve Price and representatives from Anacortes, Friday Harbour and the State of Washington will join Association members and residents of Sidney in a visible greeting of their neighbours from the U.S.A.

Sidney Town Crier Kenny Podmore will emcee the event and there will be representation from the RCMP. The Sister Cities Association will have coffee and cookies available for spectators.

According to the Association, there has been concern in the past that the route may be closed down. In recent years, however, there been a significant increase in ridership, hopefully ensuring its continuation.

The ferry will depart on the return trip to Friday Harbour and Anacortes at 12.10 p.m.
