Woman hospitalized after being struck in a crosswalk in Central Saanich

Police still investigating cause of the crash at West Saanich Road and Wallace Drive on Dec. 4

A woman is in hospital and is expected to be there for a while, after being struck in a crosswalk in Central Saanich this morning.

Constable Glen Davies of the Central Saanich Police Service says the woman was in a crosswalk a the intersection of West Saanich Road and Wallace Drive at approximately 10:44 a.m. Dec. 4, when a vehicle entered it and struck her.

Davies said the pedestrian suffered serious injuries, including broken bones in her arm and hand, as well as a possible concussion. She was taken to Victoria General Hospital, he said, where she is expected to remain overnight. The injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

The driver of the vehicle, according to police, was turning from West Saanich Road onto Wallace Drive when their vehicle hit the pedestrian in the crosswalk. Davies said the cause of the incident is still under investigation, but there was no rain and at the time of the incident, “driving conditions were clear.”

No violation tickets have been issued, nor have charges been recommended against the driver, as of 4:15 p.m. Monday afternoon.

That portion of road in Central Saanich was closed for only about one hour, while police investigators worked the scene.
