Why laughter is a part of daily life for these Island residents

Stress relief from laughter? It’s no joke – just ask the residents at Berwick Royal Oak and Berwick House

Whether it’s a morning chuckle over coffee or a themed dinner filled with silly costumes and clever one-liners, laughter is a regular part of life at Berwick.

“Laughter does your body good,” says Kathy McAree, community relations manager at Berwick Royal Oak. “It lifts your mood, relieves stress and helps you feel more connected.” According to some experts, that’s not just feel-good advice – it’s backed by science.

When we laugh, our body takes in more oxygen, stimulates our heart, lungs and muscles, and releases feel-good endorphins. The result? A calmer nervous system, lower blood pressure and a lighter mental load. It’s no wonder Berwick residents make laughter part of their wellness routine.

Laughter in action

Just recently, Berwick Royal Oak hosted a Comedy Through the Ages themed dinner – complete with throwback costumes and non-stop giggles.

Active living manager Rachelle Reath dressed up as Lucille Ball, another active living team member appeared as Charlie Chaplin, and residents joined in the fun with their own costumes. Later that afternoon, Berwick Royal Oak welcomed award-winning comedian Syd Bosel to the theatre for a laughter-filled show.

That spirit of playfulness continues day to day. “Not a day goes by where I’m not in stitches laughing with residents about who knows what,” McAree says. “I love stopping by the café each morning to hear what’s on their minds – and stirring the pot in a fun way!”

Resident Dagmar Leuenberger-Swift adds, “There is so much to entertain here. Your days can be as full and happy as you choose. I find that sitting with different people at mealtimes is a great form of entertainment.”

She also notes that her fellow residents “have lived wonderful lives and have marvellous stories to share. They become your friends and family. One of the comedians they brought in had us laughing so much we had tears in our eyes!”

The healing power of connection

“Whenever we have a themed dinner, I get great enjoyment from the beautiful decorations in our dining room,” says resident Irene Watts. “With all the staff dressed in costumes, it adds a real sense of celebration. They all seem to be in the spirit of the occasion – it makes it fun for all of us!”

Resident George Fraser adds, “More than just a residence, Berwick is an entertainment, activity, culinary and friendship centre. Smiles and laughter abound from both staff and residents.”

A little laughter can go a long way. Whether it’s a belly laugh or a gentle giggle, laughter helps ease stress, connect people and brighten even the cloudiest of days. At Berwick Royal Oak and Berwick House, they’re firm believers that laughter truly is the best medicine.
