Saanich council next Tuesday will discuss bylaw issues surrounding wildlife including rabbits and deer.

Animals big and small will be the topic of conversation at next Tuesday’s committee of the whole meeting, as Saanich councillors consider bylaws relating to deer, rabbits and chickens.

Staff is recommending council look at prohibiting feeding deer, to minimize the human-animal interactions. They also may look at amending the maximum allowable fence height to deter the animals from jumping into backyards.

As for rabbits, a bylaw that would ban the sale of unsterilized rabbits, as well as prohibiting the abandonment and feeding of the animals on public or private property, will be reviewed.

Councillors will also look at the possibility of allowing backyard chickens on lots bigger than 560 square metres.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday (March 29) at Saanich municipal hall.
