A 24-year-old Victoria man could face arson charges after his vehicle was found engulfed in flames in the Victoria City Rowing Club parking lot at Elk Lake Wednesday evening.

Police and fire responded around 6:30 p.m. to find the 2009 Mazda on fire.

While on scene, a man approached officers from the woods and identified himself as the vehicle owner. It was quickly noticed that he had obvious burns to his head and face.

Saanich police Sgt. Dean Jantzen said the man provided police with inconsistent statements and officers immediately became suspicious about the nature and cause of the fire.

"Having burns on you is obviously a direct link to a fire," Jantzen said. "Right from the start, our investigating officers had concerns, and his story was not adding up."

Police are still investigating the incident, but the 24-year-old was arrested. The crown has been asked to consider one charge of arson for fraudulent purposes.

Police are asking any witnesses to the fire to come forward, as well as anyone who was near the rowing club or nearby dog park. Contact Const. Jereme Leslie at 250-475-4321 if you can help.
