Bears active in rural Saanich, authorities say

At least one bear is active in rural Saanich, authorities say, after hives were attacked and bear scat was found late last week.

Two reports in a span of 24 hours from the same residence in the 200-block of Durrance Rd. on Thursday and Friday morning indicate a bear is roaming the area.

"We just want to advise residents to be aware and be mindful of typical bear advisories when there's a bear sighting: make sure your garbage bins are secure and tight, and mind your small children," Saanich police Sgt. Dean Jantzen said.

Pound officers and the Conservation Officer Service were contacted, but the bear could not be located.
