Belligerent man hauled off to jail -- twice in one night

The man had just left a nearby pub, and when confronted by officers, he tried to engage in a fight.

A man should be well acquainted with the Saanich police cellblocks after being arrested twice in a span of four hours Friday.

He was initially arrested around 6 p.m. by Capital Regional District Integrated Road Safety Unit officers who were conducting a roadblock in the 3200-block of Douglas Street.

The man had just left a nearby pub, and when confronted by officers, he became "extremely belligerent … yelling, taunting officers, trying to get them to engage in a fight," Saanich police Sgt. Dean Jantzen said.

Pepper spray was used to subdue the man, who was then taken to Saanich police headquarters.

He was released two hours later after calming down.

Before 10 p.m., Saanich officers were conducting a roadblock in the same area of Douglas Street when a taxi pulled up carrying the same man.

While the officer was speaking with the driver, the man in the back seat once again became belligerent and "at some point there was a mention of a knife," Jantzen said.

The man was arrested and brought back to Saanich police headquarters again, where he incited a half-dozen other individuals being held to throw whatever was within reach, and punch the cell doors, walls, camera and sprinkler system.

He was handcuffed and held overnight.

A 28-year-old Mission man faces charges including assaulting a police officer, refusing to provide a breath sample, a driving prohibition and violation tickets.
