Victoria police are investigating a sudden death at a construction site in Victoria on Tuesday afternoon.

Just before 4 p.m., officers were called to the 800-block of Government Street for a man who suffered potentially life-threatening injuries at the Customs House building that is currently under construction.

The man later died from his injuries.

The B.C. Coroners Service confirmed the coroner was called on Sept. 22 around 4:30 p.m. for a death.

Construction workers looked pained as they watched the scene from across the street.

While other roads have reopened, Government Street remained closed as of 4:45 p.m.

Jamie Dunlap, a spokesperson for Banyan Group of Companies, said in a statement that counselling was being made available to those who are affected.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm there has been a serious incident resulting in a fatality of a worker on one of our downtown projects,” read Dunlap’s statement.

Police said more updates will be provided as soon as they are able, as the investigation continues.

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and those affected by this incident,” said the Victoria Police Department in a press release, adding victims’ services could be reached by calling 250-995-7351 or the 24-hour Victim Link line at 1-800-563-0808.
