Nineteen teams composed out of University of Victoria students, faculty, staff and area businesses raised about $1,600 for the United Way by pushing a hollowed-out 1972 Volkswagen Beetle around UVic’s Ring Road Sunday.
Co-organizer Darren Gervais-Harrison of UVic’s Engineering Students’ Society said the event — which has been on-going for at least 20 years — pays tribute to the tradition among engineers to use the iconic car in “silly” ways to raise awareness
of engineering while serving the community. Donations can also be made www.uvic.ca/unitedway.
