Check your statements, police advise recent patrons of Station House Pub

In early July, RCMP reported at least 53 credit cards had been compromised at the pub within the last few months

For the second time in the past month West Shore RCMP are reporting a scam at the Station House Pub in Langford.

RCMP say that within the past two weeks they have confiscated two compromised PIN pads from the business.

In early July, RCMP reported at least 53 credit cards had been compromised at the pub within the last few months in a scam carried out over the Internet.

Now police are saying that five debit cards were also compromised at the pub between June 18 to June 21.

Electronic devices were installed into two PIN pads that captured debit and credit card information.

The first compromised PIN pad was discovered and removed from the business about two weeks ago.

On Monday, July 23, police seized another PIN pad from the pub. Fossum couldn’t say how the second compromised PIN pad wasn’t found in initial searches and said it’s possible it had been installed in the pub recently.

Fossum also said it’s possible it was an inside job, but believes it’s more likely to be the work of someone not employed by the pub.

Pub owner Bill Beadle said he has gone over and above required efforts to improve his security and is having all his debit machines replaced with more modern, secure PIN pads.

“I’ve probably overdone what I need to do,” Beadle said. “Obviously someone decided to challenge my pub full out, premeditated. I’ve had to button it up.”

Beadle doesn’t suspect any employees either but said everyone is “guilty until proven innocent.” He advises other businesses to check their debit machines to make sure they haven’t been tampered with.

RCMP still recommends anyone who has been to the Station House Pub lately to look at their bank statements and follow up on irregularities, along with informing the RCMP.

“Let the RCMP know, let us know about it, so the investigation can proceed,” Fossum said.
