A masked man robbed the CIBC bank in Colwood at gunpoint Wednesday morning.

A lone man wearing dark glasses, a dust mask and a safety vest entered the bank at Juan de Fuca Centre plaza at 310 Goldstream Ave. at about 10:55 a.m., brandishing a handgun.

He waved the gun at a customer, motioning they should get out of the way before he approached a teller and demanded cash. West Shore RCMP say he waved the gun in the direction of the other three tellers indicating they should hand over money.

The man fled in the direction of Island Highway with an undisclosed amount of cash. Its unclear if he fled in a vehicle or had accomplices. West Shore RCMP officers and a police dog attended, but couldn’t track the man.

Bank employees have been referred to Greater Victoria victim services counselling.

West Shore RCMP Const. Julie Chanin said customers and employees acted in the exact proper manner. “No amount of money is worth resisting or taking a chance of being injured,” she said.

The robber is described as white, six feet tall and of medium build. He was wearing a dark hoodie, an orange safety vest, jeans, brown toque, black gloves, dark sun glasses and a white dust mask disguising his face.

Investigators ask witnesses or anyone who saw this man in the area of the CIBC bank or has information about this robbery to contact West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).
